Leading a LIfe of Meaning and Fulfillment through Engaged Buddhism

In this class Jamal will dive deeply into the principles and practices of Engaged Buddhism taught by Thich Nhat Hanh in his book, “Zen and the Art of Saving the Planet.”  He will help us find ways to apply these principles and practices to our everyday life and our own personal situations, in order to work deeply and effectively in the world.  Right action is only possible if it is a reflection of deep inner work to become a more developed, complete human being.

Life Lessons Gleaned from Grief and Loss: An Islamic Perspective

IWithin the pain of the death of a loved one lies a quiet invitation to open our heart and mind to a deeper understanding of our bewildering and mysterious life journey. For centuries, sacred texts and sages have told us that the ways in which we heal and reframe our suffering shapes our being and sculpts the destiny of our life.

Join us as we hear from author Jamal Rahman who will draw upon teachings of the Qur’an, sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, and insights of Islamic mystics like Rumi, Hafez and Rabia, to find meaning, inner peace and growth in midst of mourning.

In 2024, our spiritual discernment will be Making a Home for the Mystic Heart

Our main source of inspiration for this year is Interspiritual Meditation by Edward W. Bastian. In this book, he points out the necessity for our spiritual practices to be performed in a context of intention and wisdom that supports and informs them. He outlines a series of steps we can take to help integrate our practice, wisdom, and daily life. We can consider each of these steps in a personal, communal, or universal domain. Also, as particular independent practices or as elements in a ritual sequence.

Principles and Practices in Engaged Buddhism

In this class, Jamal will introduce some of the basic principles and
practices of Buddhism as they relate to both our personal spiritual development and our
compassionate, purposeful action in the world around us. How can we find ways to join
with others and work deeply and effectively to address meaningful social change? This
right action is only possible if it is a reflection of deep inner work to become a more
developed, complete human being. Insights and practices are gleaned from the
National Bestselling book by Thich Nhat Hanh, entitled, “Zen and the Art of Saving the
Planet.”

2025 Contemplative Summit

Thousands of us from around the globe will be exploring this year’s theme:

The Spacious Heart: Holding Suffering with Love

We’ll be joined by amazing guests, like Parker Palmer, Jacqui Lewis, Fr. Greg Boyle, Kathleen Norris, and many others. Together, we’ll ask:

  • How might we make space in our hearts for joy and grief, for awe and uncertainty?
  • How do we stay tender when the world feels hard?
  • Where does the contemplative path meet the cry for justice?
  • What can forgotten mystics — and even our own shadows — teach us now?

Webinar: Reflections on Verses of Beauty and Wisdom

In this book, Jamal illustrates the treasured Sufi practice of meditating on a beautiful Qur’anic verse, accompanied by another Qur’anic verse, saying of the Prophet Muhammad, or teaching story or poetry of the mystics such as Rumi, Hafez or Rabia.

The “accompaniments” illuminate the original verse. By pondering on them, one might begin to feel a shift within and slowly grow in higher consciousness. This spiritual evolvement is embodied in the traditional saying, “Once the blush of the Beloved graces you, there is no going back to being a green apple. “

In this program, in response to questions, Jamal will reflect on various verses of beauty and wisdom from the Qur’an in order to understand some of its deeper meanings and relevance to our time and our world today. We invite you, regardless of your faith or no faith, to join us on this journey of discovery.
