The Sacred Art of Listening – Commentary by A. Helwa

By A. Helwa

“Those who listen closely to all that is said and follow the best of it; it is they whom God has graced with His guidance, and it is they who are endowed with insight. “(Qur’an 39:18)

“Listening is like putting your head on a person’s chest and sinking into the answer.” (Rumi)

Do not be like those who say ‘We heard’ though in fact they were not listening.” (Qur’an 8:21)

Open the ears of your heart and allow Allah’s words to awaken your soul.  When my sorrow tangles my tongue and my feelings are too heavy to lay on the backs of words, that is when I cry.  These tears that I hide are a language that only God speaks.  He knows every twirl of every atom inside of me.  And so I stand on my broken faith, and I come with my mountains of mistakes, because I have nowhere else to go.

Who can heal me better than the One who formed my soul from the breath of His Love? Like a broken cloud that rains upon the dirt, my pain overflows past the edges of my eyes upon the Earth where I prostrate to the only One who knows exactly how I feel.  When I don’t have the words, but still need to be heard, I fall into the love of Allah.  He is always there for me.  Like the sky that covers everything, He is there.  His Mercy has no end, for He is a Friend that will never leave, the One whose name alone brings my heart the peace it so desperately seeks.
