“So I call to witness the rosy glow of sunset; the night and its progression; and the moon as it grows into fullness; surely you shall travel from stage to stage. What, then, is the matter with them, that they do not have faith in the unfolding?” (Qur’an 84: 16-20)
We never know how our actions can inspire those around us. Sometimes a little bit of light is all that a flower needs to blossom. Don’t underestimate the power of your kindness. Sometimes we may feel our capacity to give is so limited, and the world’s needs are so great, that we get discouraged from even trying. When we feel too overwhelmed to try and heal the great pains of the world, we must remember that everything created originates from a humble beginning. Grains of sand over time create mountains, a microscopic sperm and egg creates a human being, and even the big bang that may have resulted in the creation of our entire universe began from the space the size of a pea. Do not underestimate what Allah can create through a sincere heart and intention, no matter how small the gesture may be. As Imam Ali famously said, “Do business with Allah and you will profit.”
The Qur’an confirms this claim when it says, “The parable of those who spend their wealth in the way of God is that of a grain which grows seven ears, each bearing a hundred grains. God gives multiple increases to whomever He wills. God is The All-Bounteous, The All-Knowing” (2:261). We are also reminded in the Qur’an that we are only asked to give according to the capacity that Allah gave to us: “Let him who has plenty spend from his plenty. And let the one whose provision is measured spend from what Allah has given Him. Allah does not charge a soul for other than what He has given. Allah will bring about ease after hardship” (65:07). It is the small steps we take today that become miles tomorrow; acts done with love and consistency create revolutions of kindness and light that overthrow the forces of darkness. As Rumi says, “Listen, oh drop, give yourself up without regret, and in exchange gain the ocean. Listen oh drop, bestow upon yourself this honor and in the arms of the sea be secure. Who indeed should be so fortunate? An ocean wooing a drop! In Allah’s name, in Allah’s name, sell and buy at once! Give a drop and take this sea full of pearls.”
